Good afternoon, Raven Families,
It was a very busy and exciting week, filled with many wonderful field experiences. Our Grade 8 students headed to Riverwatch, while our Grade 7 band students had the opportunity to learn and grow at Mount Royal University.
It was also an action-packed week for our athletics, and we are incredibly proud of how well our students represented our school through their effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
After such a full week, I wish all of our students and families a wonderful and restful fall weekend!
RTA Terry Fox Run:
“I want to set an example that will never be forgotten.” – Terry Fox
- Terry Fox has inspired Canadians for more than 40 years through his courage, determination, perseverance, and leadership. His Marathon of Hope showed us that one person, with a big enough goal and the determination to keep going, can inspire an entire nation.
- This year, RTA Ravens are challenged again to reflect on Terry’s example and think about how we can show these same qualities in our own lives. Through our Terry Fox challenge, we will focus on perseverance, resilience, courage, and leadership—and how small actions can make a big difference.
- On Monday, October 5, 2026, we will begin our challenge to collectively run 5 373 km, the distance Terry covered during his Marathon of Hope. Students and staff are encouraged to run during their PE period and see how far we can go together. Our ultimate goal is to reach 7 821 km—the entire length of the Trans-Canada Highway!
- Last year, the RTA Ravens ran an incredible 2 667.6 km. Can we beat last year’s distance, reach Terry’s 5 373 km, and keep going even further?
- Let’s rise to the challenge, RTA Ravens, and keep Terry’s legacy moving forward!
- This year, we are only collecting online donations. Please do not send cash to the school. Please click the link to find our school’s Terry Fox Donation Page. – Ms. Leung
Resource Supports
- Students have been back at school for about a month. Middle school can bring both excitement and challenges, so we encourage families to check in regularly, celebrate successes, and stay connected with teachers. Teachers continue to support important executive functioning skills such as organization, planning, time management, and independence. IPPs will be coming home soon, and we have attached some helpful resources for parents to support students in working toward their goals throughout the year.
- Executive functioning (EF) skills help us stay organized, manage our time, plan ahead, and follow through on tasks. It is important to note that these skills don’t fully develop until age 25 and over and are often delayed in neurodivergent populations (ADHD, ASD, etc.) by 3-5 years. These skills continue to develop into early adulthood and may develop more slowly for some students. Students benefit from support and structure at home as they build these important skills.
- Ways to Support Executive Functioning at Home:
- Make sleep a priority to help with focus, learning, and emotional regulation.
- Encourage independence by students completing age-appropriate tasks on their own.
- Create routines with clear expectations for mornings, evenings, and homework time.
- Support problem-solving and emotional regulation by listening, validating feelings, and encouraging your child to think of solutions.
