A Week in a Glance: November 6 - November 10

Happy Friday, Raven families,

It was a busy week at RTA, filled with basketball games, Halloween costumes, a practice fire drill, field trips, buddies, and science fair projects… I’m looking forward to gaining an extra hour this week!

Indigenous Veterans Day | November 8:

  • Indigenous Veterans Day is a day to recognize and acknowledge the many contributions and sacrifices of Aboriginals not only to Canada’s war efforts but to its peacekeeping reputation. In this day and age of reconciliation, acknowledging Aboriginal roles in the protection of Canada will help other citizens understand what true reconciliation means to the country as a whole. We must never forget the sacrifices and accomplishments of Aboriginal Veterans, especially as we move forward in our journey of healing, reconciliation and a renewed relationship between Canada and its First Nations peoples. Nov. 8 is about making efforts to better understand the role Indigenous Veterans have played in Canada, and expressing our heartfelt gratitude. – Government of Canada website

Métis Week | November 13 to 17:

  • Métis Week is held annually in November in the week surrounding Louis Riel Day which is on November 16th. Louis Riel Day is observed to remember and honour Riel’s leadership in leading the Métis people of Western Canada during the Red River and North-West Resistance.
  • The Métis are one of three constitutionally recognized groups of Indigenous people in Canada whose ancestral roots are a combination of European and Indigenous.
  • The Métis have a distinct culture and language as well as a shared history and many kin relations.
  • In this video Keith Diakiw and Josh Morin introduce Métis culture and history as represented by three major symbols: the sash, the Red River cart, and the Métis Nation flag. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ATDgdeK5qU
