Building Resilient Learners: Navigating Friendships and Social Challenges:

  • At RTA, we are committed to fostering a positive and inclusive environment where all students feel safe, supported, and valued. As part of this commitment, we recognize that social interactions—both positive and challenging—are an important part of a child's development.
  • Children are constantly learning how to navigate friendships, disagreements, and social dynamics. While some conflicts can feel upsetting, they are often a natural part of growing up and an opportunity to build important life skills such as communication, resilience, and empathy. Our role as educators and parents is to guide students through these experiences so they can develop the confidence to handle social challenges effectively.

How We Support Students at School

  • Teaching Conflict Resolution Skills: Students are encouraged to express their feelings respectfully, seek peaceful solutions, and know when to seek help from an adult.
  • Encouraging Positive Peer Relationships: Through classroom discussions, role-playing, and school-wide initiatives, we promote kindness, inclusion, and empathy.
  • Providing a Safe and Supportive Environment: When conflicts arise, our staff works closely with students to help them understand different perspectives and develop strategies to move forward positively.

How Parents Can Support Social Growth at Home

  • Encourage Open Conversations: Ask your child about their day, who they played with, and how they handled any challenges.
  • Differentiate between Bullying and Conflict: Not all difficult interactions are bullying. While bullying is repeated and intentional harm, many peer conflicts are one-time or situational and can be resolved with guidance. Alberta.ca
  • Help Your Child Build Coping Skills: Teach them how to stand up for themselves, when to walk away, and how to find trusted friends or adults for support.

For additional support, consider the following Calgary-based service:

  • Alberta Mentoring Partnership – Peer Mediation and Skills Training: Offers workshops that include classroom training, bullying awareness presentations, role-playing, mentoring, and team building to teach strategies to deal with conflict. https://albertamentors.ca
  • By working together, we can empower our students to develop the social and emotional skills they need to navigate friendships and challenges with confidence. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
  • Thank you for being a part of our school community and for supporting our shared goal of fostering resilience and respect among all students.
